Editorial Philosophy

Quiet Deliberation Over Commercial Rush

Substantive book editing requires patience, sustained focus, and deep immersion. We do not operate on factory production lines or subject authors to rushed, performative video critiques.

Asynchronous Precision

Written Intellectual Rigour

Editors think best with text in front of them; authors digest critique best in quiet solitude. Every observation we deliver is thoroughly formulated, documented, and cited directly to page numbers in your manuscript.

Zero Pressure

No Video Meetings Required

Novelists should never have to react to hard artistic feedback on camera. Our process eliminates awkward video calls, scheduling across distant time zones, and on-the-spot defensiveness. You absorb notes in your own time.

Author-Centred

Authorial Sovereignty

You remain the sole master of your creative vision. We provide diagnostic clarity, alternative structural pathways, and craft guidance, but every revision decision belongs solely to you.

Step-by-Step Architecture

The Six Stages of Our Editorial Journey

A transparent, deterministic progression engineered to give your novel the precise degree of intervention it requires.

01
Intake & Diagnosis

Inquiry — Author & Manuscript Details

You begin by submitting your complete manuscript file alongside detailed contextual notes through our secure portal. We ask for your word count, genre, intended publishing pathway (traditional query or independent publication), target comp titles, and any specific artistic dilemmas you have encountered during drafting.

What you provide: Completed manuscript (.docx or .rtf), 1-page synopsis or premise statement, author notes detailing specific revision concerns.
02
Diagnostic Evaluation

Assessment — The Senior Editorial Dossier

A senior fiction editor reads your manuscript in its entirety from cover to cover. Rather than jumping into superficial line edits, the editor conducts a comprehensive macro diagnosis. They evaluate narrative causality, plot architecture, character motivation, pacing across acts, point of view discipline, and psychic distance.

What you receive: A 10–15 page bespoke Editorial Dossier detailing foundational strengths, structural friction points, and an objective evaluation of market readiness.
03
Strategic Direction

Recommendation — The Objective Revision Roadmap

With the assessment completed, we provide an unvarnished, honest recommendation for your next stage. We never upsell unnecessary editing tiers. If your architecture is sound, we will tell you directly that you only need line editing or copyediting. If the manuscript requires fundamental restructuring, we advise developmental editing before polishing sentences.

Possible pathways: Developmental Editing (macro restructuring), Line Editing (stylistic elevation), Copyediting (mechanical precision), or direct Agent Query Preparation.
04
Deep Intervention

Editorial Work — Assigned Genre Specialist

If you choose to proceed with hands-on editing, your manuscript is placed with a dedicated editor specializing in your exact fiction genre (e.g., Literary Fiction, Historical, Psychological Suspense, Speculative). The editor immerses themselves in your book without arbitrary daily speed quotas, examining every scene, paragraph, or sentence according to the agreed scope.

Craft focus: Depending on the tier, deep margin commentary on scene tension, character consistency, sentence cadence, voice elevation, and Chicago Manual of Style rigor.

Delivery — Editorial Package & The 7–10 Day Review Window

Upon completion, your full editorial suite is uploaded to your private Client Vault. Delivery immediately initiates your unhurried Deliverable Review Window (7 business days for assessments, line editing, and copyediting; 10 business days for developmental editing). You are never pressured to respond immediately.

Primary deliverables:

Review Before Payment

Review Before Final Payment — Dialogue, Revisions & Approval

Our Review Before Final Payment model gives you complete security. You inspect the work in quiet solitude, submit written clarifying questions, and request in-scope revisions. Your editor answers in comprehensive written detail. You only authorize release of the final milestone balance once your deliverables are complete and satisfactory.

The Working Author's Atelier

Designed for Serious Writers Worldwide

Whether you write in London, New York, Melbourne, Edinburgh, or Tokyo, our asynchronous workflow respects your creative rhythm and professional schedule.

Live video meetings frequently produce superficial agreement: an author nods politely while feeling defensive inside, or an editor delivers unexamined initial impressions to fill silence. By conducting all critique through written documents, every argument is reasoned, every alternative is tested against the text, and you maintain complete emotional space to revise.

  • Constructive Objectivity: We do not offer hollow praise that flatters the writer while leaving plot holes intact. We provide candid, respectful truth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Details on how our editorial process functions in practice.

In our decades of combined editorial experience, we have found that live video calls often hinder rather than help the creative process. Authors frequently feel forced to justify choices in real time, while editors provide off-the-cuff remarks rather than deeply considered solutions. Written critique gives the author private dignity to absorb feedback without performing, and gives the editor the necessary focus to formulate watertight craft solutions with page references.

We accept Microsoft Word documents (.docx) and Rich Text Format (.rtf) files for all editing engagements. Word files are necessary to enable standard industry Track Changes and margin commentary. For Manuscript Assessments, clean PDF files are also acceptable.

Turnarounds depend on manuscript length and service level. A Full Manuscript Assessment for a standard 80,000-word novel typically requires 2 to 3 weeks. Full Developmental Editing requires 4 to 5 weeks, and Line Editing requires 3 to 4 weeks. Exact delivery schedules are confirmed upon intake.

Our core services require a completed draft. A narrative cannot be properly diagnosed for character arcs, structural midpoint crises, or climactic payoff unless the entire story exists on the page. If you have an incomplete draft, we recommend finishing the draft before submitting for an assessment.

You retain complete creative sovereignty. An editor's role is to illuminate how your story functions for an intelligent, objective reader, diagnose where tension slackens, and suggest viable craft remedies. You are never obligated to adopt every suggestion; your authorial vision always reigns supreme.
