- Level 1 (Cinematic Distance): 'It was winter of the year 1853. A lone rider approached the valley.'
- Level 2 (Social Distance): 'Edward arrived in the valley at dusk, his boots caked in yellow clay.'
- Level 3 (Observational Proximity): 'Edward looked at the yellow clay on his boots. The road from Dover had taken four days.'
- Level 4 (Direct Interiority): 'Four days from Dover. His boots were ruined, and Mary wouldn't even be waiting.'
- Level 5 (Stream of Consciousness): 'Dover mud, four days wasted, her face turned away at the gate, always turned away.'
